OGTech signs pact with German Goethe-Institut
MUSCAT Under the auspices of H.E. the
German Ambassador to the Sultanate, Klaus
Geyer, the contract between the Oman German
University of Technology (OGTech),
represented by the acting vice-chancellor,
Professor Michael Jansen and the Goethe-Institut
Liaison Officer for the Gulf-Region, Dr.
Elke Kaschl-Mohni, was signed on Wednesday
at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Muscat.

In addition, starting in October this year,
public German courses will be offered at
OGTech through a German Language Center
under the patronage of the Goethe-Institut.
The German Language Center will be located
in the premises of OGTech, on the beach road
in North Al Ghubra.
With two German Language Centers in the UAE,
the presence of Goethe Institutes in the
Gulf is very recent, but expanding very
fast. The oldest Goethe-Institut in the Arab
world is located in Beirut and the biggest
Goethe Institute is in Cairo. “There is a
high interest in learning German throughout
the Arab world. Each year more than 149,000
people register for courses at the Goethe
Institutes worldwide and over 20,000 sign-up
for German courses at Goethe Institutes in
Germany,” said Dr. Elke Kaschl-Mohni,
director of the Goethe Institute Liaison
Office for the Gulf region, which was
established in 2002 in Abu Dhabi.
“For us the cooperation with OGTech is an
ideal way to combine synergies and enhance
our presence in Oman. We have many mutual
fields of interests and target groups and
can wonderfully combine our programmes and
activities,” she said. The main activities
of the new German Language Center will focus
on German courses but also on intercultural
aspects and regular events will be held
throughout the year.
The Goethe Institut is the Federal Republic
of Germany’s cultural institution
operational worldwide. The Institute
promotes the study of German abroad and
encourages international cultural exchange.
The Goethe-Institut fosters knowledge about
Germany by providing information on its
culture, society and politics. Much of the
Goethe-Institut’s overall budget consists of
yearly grants from the German Foreign Office
and the German Press Office.
