First workshop about studying in Germany
at College of Sharia Law
MUSCAT The first workshop about studying
in Germany was held at the College of Sharia
Law under the auspices of Dr Mahmoud Suleimi,
Director General of scholarships at the
Ministry of Higher Education. The workshop
was organized by the Ministry of Higher
Education in cooperation with the Cultural
Attaché of the Omani Embassy in London,
Saida Abdulla Al Subhi. During the event,
Omani alumni students from German
universities recalled their experiences in
Germany and the Oman-German University of
Technology (OGTech) presented their
programme to the audience.
“This is the first workshop ever organized.
More and more students are interested in
studying in Germany,” said Dr. Ahmed Al
Harrasi, lecturer at the department of
Chemistry, College of Science at Sultan
Qaboos University. Al Harrasi himself did
his PhD in Germany, at the Freie Universität
in Berlin.
Mahmoud Al Saidi, one of the next Omani
students to study engineering at RWTH Aachen
University, the university affiliated to
OGTech said: “In the passed two years, I
have studied German in Dresden and then
passed a foundation year at the so called
Studienkolleg.” Al Saidi who chose the RWTH
Aachen university because of its good
reputation. “With 260 institutes and
specialisations in technology, our
university is one of the most prestigious
universities of engineering in Germany and
in Europe. We are part of the IDEA league,”
said Nicole Hurtz, head of the office for
foreign students at RWTH Aachen University
during a presentation about OGTech and RWTH
Aachen University. “The main goal of the
European IDEA league is to have a common
quality management system and strong
partnerships,” mentioned Hurtz, who stressed
that there are possibilities for students
from Oman to pass their masters and PhD in
Engineering in Germany. “Many of our master
programmes at RWTH Aachen University are
taught in English,” said Hurtz.
However, with the establishment of OGTech in
Muscat it is no longer necessary to leave
the country in order to get a high quality
German education. In October OGTech will
start the foundation year in its premises in
North Al Ghubra. “The language of
instruction will be English. Our strength
will be as links with the industry. Our
professors already have research projects
with Omani and international companies. All
our certificates will be recognized by
OGTech and RWTH Aachen University,” said Dr.
Barbara Stäuble, project advisor at OGTech.
