Many young Omanis visited OGTech stand at
Higher Education Institutions Exhibition
2007
MUSCAT The conclusion of the Higher
Education Institutions Exhibition 2007 on
Thursday at the International Exhibition
Center in Seeb, Professor Dr. Hilgers,
vice-rector of the Oman-German University of
Technology (OGTech) drew a positive result
on the university’s participation. “All in
all, we had a great feedback. Many young
Omani students visited our stand together
with their families,” said Hilgers, who is
looking forward to the beginning of the
study year in October 2007. I am really
looking forward to our contribution in
shaping an academic environment and the
future of the Sultanate of Oman and the
whole Gulf,” said Hilgers.
In October this year OGTech will start with
a foundation year in its premises in North
Al Ghubra. Language of instruction will be
English. The programme will include Academic
English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and
Creative Design. Later on the university
will have study programmes in Applied
Information Technologies, Applied
Geosciences, Regional Management and Tourism
as well as in Urban Planning and
Architectural Design. The BSc will include
trips to the RWTH Aachen University during
the studies, depending on the subject. All
curricula were designed by German professors
at RWTH Aachen University and the teaching
methods and materials will be of the newest
and highest standard. All study fees at
OGTech include a laptop for each student,
wireless LAN connection at the university
and all study books. If required,
accomodation for female students and
transportation to the OGTech will be
offered.
Studying at OGTech will not only be learning
by heart but applying actively the theory
learned in the classroom. “We at OGTech want
to create an environment for applied
research inside Oman. At all levels of the
studies, we want the students to participate
actively and participate for example in
excursions and internships. We will
establish close ties to the local and
international industry. I believe only with
close ties to the industry sector we can
ensure the employability of our students. We
want to be a university not only for Omanis
but for the people of the whole Gulf
region,” said Hilgers.
At the end of the study programmes students
will get a joint-degree of the German RWTH
Aachen University and OGTech. “This degree
will enable them to continue their Masters
and PhD studies abroad or with us at OGTech.
We want to start as soon as possible with
post graduate studies. However we will start
with Bachelor of Science degrees,” stressed
Hilgers. Besides Masters and PhD degrees,
OGTech is planning to offer more programmes
as well as short courses and workshops for
everybody interested in. The premises of
OGTech are located in North Al Ghubra,
beside the beach, close to the Chedi Hotel.
“At present we have our administration
offices and the classrooms there. Later on
we will have our own campus,” said Hilgers.
For further information you can visit the
OGTech offices, that are open from Saturday
to Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm.
