OGTech will implement Aachen Quality
Management System
MUSCAT To implement a long-term quality
management system at the Oman-German
University of Technology (OGTech), chief
Eng. Dr. Marc Betzold and Eng. Bastian
Quattelbaum from RWTH Aachen University in
Germany, visited OGTech in the past week.
The Foreign German Academic Exchange Office
(DAAD) has granted RWTH Aachen one million
Euro last May to establish a quality
management system at OGTech.
“We will implement our Aachen Quality
Management System, adopted to the Omani
setting. The management system will be
implemented during the next four years and
will serve as a management and staff tool at
OGTech,” said Betzold, who heads a
sub-division of the Quality Management
Department at the Laboratory for Machine
Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at
RWTH Aachen University. The WZL laboratory
is one of the biggest departments of
mechanical engineering and employs 950
staff, including 160 researchers. “In the
last year the budget of the WZL amounted
32,1 Million Euros. Around 37 per cent, came
from consultant projects for applied
research,” stressed Betzold.
The WZL Institute at RWTH Aachen University
carries out basic and applied research
projects by directly addressing the needs of
the industry or other organizations that
want to improve their quality management
systems. Betzold and his colleague
Quattelbaum work as consultants for small
and medium-size companies in Germany as well
as for the international automotive and
aircraft industry. The Aachen Quality
Management System includes three interacting
perspectives: the management, the customer
and the company’s perspective,” said Betzold.
An important factor of the OGTech quality
management system will be the academic study
programmes. “We will ensure sustainable
qualifications, including a broad education
during our foundation programme, in addition
to short-courses for anyone who is
interested. We will ensure the highest
quality of all courses,” said Betzold.
The quality management system will include a
standardization of all activities at the
university and an international
accreditation of the OGTech study programmes.
“Our university will be the first European
university accredited in the Gulf,” stressed
Hilgers. For the accreditation of OGTech’s
programmes the RWTH Aachen recently selected
an independent European accreditation
agency.
One goal of the quality management system
will be as well to establish a handbook for
the foundation of universities in general.
“Compared to other German universities in
Amman and in Cairo, OGTech and its
partnership with RWTH Aachen is unique,”
said Professor Christoph Hilgers, deputy
vice-chancellor at OGTech.
In September this year OGTech will start the
foundation programme including Academic
English, Mathematics, IT and electives in
Chemistry, Physics and Creative Thinking.
Later on the university will start with
Applied Information Technologies, Applied
Geosciences, Regional Management and Tourism
as well as Urban Planning and Architectural
Design. The OGTech admission center is
located in North Al Ghubra, the office is
open Saturday to Wednesday from 9 am to 5
pm.
