OGTech staff get First Aid training

MUSCAT
A number of the academic staff of Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech) have been participating in the past two days in a Basic First Aid Course with James Watson, Senior First Aid Instructor at the Oman Air Training Center. “Basic First Aid skills are imperative for everybody, either at work or in private life,” said Barbara Stauble, Academic Director at OGTech.

Watson said that by using First Aid Instructions, peoples lives have been saved in the Sultanate. “Lifting someone with a spine injury after a car accident can kill someone,” stressed Watson. “Instead the persons’ head should be kept still and the whole body moved together with six other persons,” said the First Aid Instructor.

First aid is the immediate and temporary care given to a person suffering injury or sudden illness. The aim is to give temporary primary assistance until competent medical care is obtained or until the chance of recovery without medical care is assured. “The faster you act the better,” stressed Watson. Properly applied First Aid may mean the difference between life and death. According to statistics, one third of the people could be resuscitated through first aid. Properly applied primary care should be given until a doctor arrives,” stressed Watson. The seven skills acquired during a Basic First Aid Course were primary assessment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, obstructed airway management, control of bleeding, shock management, illness assessment and injury assessment.

During Basic First Aid some general standards of patient care need to be observed such as: do no harm; move the patient only if absolutely necessary in order to avoid the possibility of aggravating the present injuries; and control the bleeding. “The loss of a lot of blood and a lack of oxygen are life threatening,“ said Watson. Most of the bleeding can be controlled through direct pressure on the wound for about six to 10 minutes. The OGTech staff learned as well how to deblock the airway through a chin lift, to look and listen to the breathing, to check the pulse, scan the body for bleeding and to maintain the body temperature.

To reinforce the Basic First Aid Course, the OGTech staff need to refresh the practical skills learned after two years.
