OGTech participated in Salalah Higher Education Fair

Salalah
The Oman-German University of Technology (OGTech) participated during the past two days in a Higher Education Fair at the Al Sa’ada Secondary School for Girls in Salalah. The exhibition was held for the first time at the Secondary School and besides OGTech three other private universities from Muscat and Salalah participated. “About 200 pupils and their English teachers came to meet us, to get more information about our Pre-University and Bachelor Programmes,” said Sousann Al Heureithy, Marketing Executive at OGTech.

“I have not heard of OGTech before, but now after having seen the programmes, I believe the University has very interesting specializations like Urban Planning and Information Technology,” said Maryam Mohammed Ismael, Director of Al Sa’ada Secondary School for Girls. With 1930 students Al Sa’ada Secondary School is the biggest Secondary School in Salalah. Currently 470 students are in grade 12 and soon they will have to decide what they are going to do after their final exams.

Ismeal believes that the best job prospects for girls are currently in the IT field. During the past three years, Al Sa’ada Secondary School introduced two IT laboratories and therefore IT is becoming more and more popular. “To pursue their future career many pupils even take a loan,” said Ismael. In addition more and more girls from Salalah are leaving their homes to study in the capital Muscat. “The times have changed, many girls want to study after school and many of them choose a university in Muscat. When I studied in the 90s, there were only eleven of us at SQU,” said Ismael. Two of the students who would like to study in Muscat are Ruqaya Al Mudhafar and Hajir Al Berequi, they are in class 11 at Al Sa’ada Secondary School. “I am one of the best in my class and I wish to study at a university in Muscat. I have family there and I could live with them,” said Ruquaya and smiled.

OGTech is the first university in the Gulf that is linked to a German University - RWTH Aachen University. The university is located on the beach road in North al Ghubra, Muscat. OGTech started its Foundation Programme in October this year. In fall 2008, the university will offer four Bachelor Programmes in Applied Information Technologies, Urban Planning and Architectural Design, Applied Geosciences and Regional Management and Tourism. All OGTech study programmes were designed by German professors from RWTH Aachen University.
