“Parents are very important for giving
guidance and support” –
Orientation Days at OGTech concluded
MUSCAT Oman-German University of
Technology (OGTech) concluded their
orientation days yesterday evening with a
dinner buffet at the OGTech premises in
North Al Gubrah. About 130 people including
OGTech students, their families and OGTech
academic and administrative staff attended
the dinner.
"After two days of introduction to our
university life, we wanted to have a get
together for students and their families,"
said Professor Christoph Hilgers,
Vice-Rector of OGTech The highlight were the
interesting speeches of our four role
models, we had invited that evening. I am
sure they really inspired and motivated our
students." All four role models came from
different sectors, i.e. Geology,
Architecture, Information Technology,
Regional Management and Tourism.
"Oman and Germany have always had good
relationships such as cultural exchange,
research and technology exchange," said
Aisha Al Kharusi, one of the role model
speakers. She is working for Boeing
International in Dubai as the Deputy
Director of Strategic Analysis in the Middle
East region. Al Kharusi predicted a bright
future with tremendous growth for the
tourism industry in the region: "According
to the World Travel Organisation, the Middle
East is one of the fastest growing regions
in tourism." Since most of the employers
want to have qualified staff, Al Kharusi
encouraged the students to work hard, to
achieve a university degree and to fulfill
their dreams. She herself holds several
degrees including an MBA in business
leadership. "I hope, one day I will be a
mentor of the students. I am there to guide
them and to listen to them," she said while
referring to her favorite mentor, her
father, H.E. Abdullah Al Kharusi, former
Ambassador of the Sultanate in Germany. "The
most important role model in my life is my
father," she said.
"The parents are very important for giving
guidance and support to their children,"
said Raza Ashraf, IT specialist and CEO of
Total Alignment in Muscat. Ashraf told the
OGTech students that studying is not only
about studying one field but also
discovering the field you like to work in,
however, in a job very often all the skills
acquired are not needed. "Take each
opportunity as it comes and try to build on
them," said Ashraf. Salima Al Mahruqi,
geologist at Petroleum Development Oman,
encouraged the female students to study
geosciences and discover the planet. "This
is still a male dominated field, however we
are equally clever." All speakers pointed
out that studying is not only acquiring
knowledge in one field, it is as well
learning different skills such as IT,
working in a team and life-long learning.
"Being successful not only means gaining a
lot of money but also fulfilling your dreams
and working in the field you like," claimed
Christa Diener, architect and engineer who
has with her own architecture, design and
urban planning company, cdp architecture,
currently different projects in the
Sultanate and in Germany. The students were
impressed by the speeches and are looking
forward to the start of their foundation
year at OGTech on October 20th.
